Introducing a New Member: Introducing Dogs to Children

Updated: Aug 16, 2024

When your family grows, whether it's with the pitter-patter of tiny paws or the cooing of a newborn, harmony within the household is paramount. This transition can be a breeze with the right steps, ensuring that both your children and canine companions adjust smoothly.

Introducing a New Puppy to a Family with Small Children

  1. Educate Your Kids: Before the puppy's arrival, teach your children how to approach and handle the puppy. Gentle touch, quiet voices, and understanding a puppy's body language are essential.

  2. Supervised Interactions: Always supervise any interaction between your puppy and your children. This not only ensures safety for both but also helps in establishing boundaries.

  3. Teach Basic Commands: Training your puppy with basic commands like "sit", "stay", and "down" can help in situations where you need to control its behaviour around kids.

  4. Safe Spaces: Both your kids and the puppy should have their own safe spaces. Puppies can benefit from a designated playpen or crate, and children should have areas where they can play without puppy interruptions.

  5. Smell: In the weeks leading up to picking up your new pal, drop off a toy or blanket with your child's and your smell on it for the Puppy or Dog to sniff. This will make your smell familiar to him or her so that the day of transition into their new home is a little more familiar.

Introducing a New Baby to a Dog Family

  1. Preparation: Before the baby's arrival, set any new boundaries for your dog, like restricted areas. This gives your dog time to adjust before the baby arrives.

  2. The First Introduction: When introducing your baby, allow your dog to sniff a baby blanket or item of clothing first. Once familiar with the scent, allow a calm and supervised meeting.

  3. Routine: Dogs thrive on routine. Try to maintain your dog's feeding, walking, and playtime schedules to prevent feelings of neglect.

  4. Positive Associations: Whenever the baby is around, offer your dog treats or toys. This ensures the dog associates the baby with positive experiences.

  5. Stay Calm: Dogs can pick up on your energy. If you're nervous about the introduction, your dog might be too. Take deep breaths, stay calm, and trust in the process.

Treats, Treats and more Treats!

In times of change, it’s great to reward your dog with lots of treats especially for calm behaviour. As you navigate these new and exciting times in your family, ensure your dog feels appreciated and loved.
